Let's talk about ESL Teaching

ESL teaching is not the career or job path we envisioned after college. We never wanted to be teachers. Teachers in America are devalued. American kids, especially teens, can be disrespectful.  Why would I want to subject myself to that? And, not that money is everything, but the pay isn't worth it either.

Matt and Kristin had really good jobs in America. They owned a house, two cars were paid off, they had 2 adorable cats, and healthcare. So, why think about moving?

It was time for a change. The world presented an opportunity, and they seized the moment. Heading into the unknown world of ESL teaching in China. Blinded by the excitement and chaos, they flew 28 hours to the other side of the map and have been there for 2 years.

Yes, 24 months to be exact.

Teaching is easy in China. On some days, you really do feel like a dancing monkey. On other days, you feel like a bad ass superhero. The kids are cute. They adore their teachers. They try so hard to talk with you. Mostly in Chinglish because they don't have the vocabulary necessary to talk more than 3-5 minutes.

Our school, Shane English School Changzhou,  is okay. I've heard there are better training centers. And of course there's international schools in Changzhou. Personally, I think the kindergarten route would have been a better choice. But, we picked Shane. And yes, we had multiple offers.

You can read other posts where we comment about our schedule. There's no need to rehash some of the schedule injustices.  Or how new teachers, and ones that are heading out, should be made to work more. Why not? You are a first year teacher and leaving after 1 year. Shane should be loyal to the 2-7 year teachers.  Yes, a teacher has been there 7 years. He has no were else to go so don't be too impressed with this.

Back to ESL teaching.  You can save a lot of money. Teachers are highly respected in China. It's easy work. Some days it is boring. Especially, when you have 7 classes in the same book. You zone out. You go through the motions. Some days it feels like a job. Some days you shake your head and laugh and the stupid business plans they implement. And some days you get angry that you aren't treated better. After all, we come from America. We have clear accents. And we are white which is desired in China. We aren't being racist by saying that. It's true.

If you want new experiences, if you want to pay off bills, if you want to teach than ESL is right for you. If you just want to travel or learn Chinese, please stay away from Shane English School Changzhou.
